How would your life be different if you accomplish these goals?

  • Overcome feeling worried all the time
  • Let go of emotional discomfort and unease
  • Stop feeling uptight, nervous, or jittery
  • Alleviate physical symptoms related to stress
  • Get over feeling overwhelmed or burnt out
  • Quit lying awake in bed with incessant thinking

Does This Sound Familiar?

Stress is a common physiological response to external events. However, feeling excess stress can lead to feeling emotionally upset and physically imbalanced. Although external situations can be challenging, the way you think about these events can reinforce feeling anxious, uncomfortable, and uneasy. Like most people, you may think so quickly that you are not even aware of what you are thinking, never mind how to change your pattern of behavior.

Under stress, it can be more difficult to feel creative, be flexible with others, and make supportive decisions. To get away from unpleasant emotions, you might overeat, binge on food (or online), or do other activities to avoid feeling what you feel. It is natural to not want to feel uncomfortable, but the stress may return when you are no longer distracted, perhaps with more intensity. Stress also can interfere with relationships because it is hard to be empathic when you are in pain.

And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.  Marianne Williamson

Here Is How Counseling Can Help

A counselor can help you overcome your problems and master stress management skills. This would involve reframing the way you think about situations and learning specific relaxation skills to feel more at ease. My approach utilizes a combination of research-based cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and mindfulness counseling to treat emotional problems. CBT will help you learn to look at situations in supportive ways and lead you to feel more hopeful, optimistic, and balanced. Mindfulness treatment will help you learn to relax, which is beneficial for your emotional state and physical well-being.

As a therapist since 2006, including five years in college counseling centers, I have been helping clients practice skills to reduce stress. The results of stress reduction lead to feeling more alert mentally, productive at work, and satisfied in your relationships. I will show you practices that are easy to learn and can be applied immediately at home. You will learn tools that will help you in the short-run and long-run, with your current problems and with any future challenges. Learning how to effectively manage stress is one of the most important skills you can learn in life!
